Our Analysis & Ratings
The Edge Pro 2 is our top-rated 2-person inflatable kayak for its outstanding performance on the water, its excellent legroom while maintaining a manageable length, and its groundbreaking construction.
Performance (speed, tracking, manoeuvrability, stability, load handling): 10/10
Speed: Higher speed translates to better paddling efficiency. In our 100m speed test, the Edge Pro 2 proved very fast, owing to its smooth PVC surface, pointed bow shape and hydrodynamic hull design.
Tracking: In our straight-line tracking test, it performed well. Much of this is down to the skeg, which very effectively keeps it on course. We found the hull shape also guided it reasonably straight when we tested it without the skeg.
Manoeuvrability: The Edge Pro 2's curved diamond-shaped hull design does a fine job of balancing the need to track straight and turn easily. It was surprisingly easy to turn for a kayak with this narrower, longer profile, which are generally excellent at tracking at the expense of manoeuvrability.
Stability: The hull's rigid full drop-stitch construction, combined with its curved base, gives this kayak exceptional stability. When we deliberately rocked it, the kayak responded to our movements just as a curved hard-shell kayak would, rather than threatening to tip as many full drop-stitch inflatables tend to do.
Load Handling: When we tested the kayak at both 50% and 80% of its capacity, it actually performed rather better. With the Edge Pro 2 fully loaded, more of the hull's lateral curve sat in the water, improving handling noticeably. This makes it an excellent choice for larger paddlers or anyone wishing to carry extra gear.
The Edge Pro 2 was the best performing 2-person kayak we tested.
Construction (materials, seams, valve quality, durability and fittings): 10/10
The Edge Pro 2 is a full drop-stitch kayak featuring Razor Kayaks' Tech-Stitch material on the exterior for added durability, which performed well in our abrasion testing.
The Edge Pro's drop-stitch uses a 5cm thickness instead of the more typical 8 to 10cm. With the hull's angles, this design provides the necessary rigidity whilst the thinner drop-stitch keeps the kayak relatively lighter and affords more cockpit space than a thicker drop-stitch would. This is particularly noticeable in a 2-person kayak. Both the hull shape and the thinner drop-stitch are features we haven't come across in inflatable kayaks before, and they offer considerable improvements on common issues with 2-person designs.
The seams and valves were neatly assembled, clearly of high quality, and held pressure throughout our three-day inflation tests. D-rings and other fittings were of an equally high standard.
Setup/Pack Down (inflation time, valves, folding, and drying): 9/10
The Edge Pro 2 has a quick-drying fully PVC outer and three valves of a matching type, making it quick and straightforward to set up and pack down. It also features a solid foam seat that simply clips in rather than requiring inflation, and a footrest that is equally easy to attach and adjust by re-clipping.
As with the Edge Pro 1, you do have to reach slightly under the hull to attach the pump to the valves, but it is a minor drawback that is well outweighed by the benefits of the enclosed hull shape.
The included bag unzips fully and has ample room to pack the kayak and accessories back in without any bother.
Portability (weight, packed size, ease of carrying): 7/10
At nearly 20kg, it is not the lightest inflatable kayak on the market, though it remains quite decent for a full drop-stitch 2-person. The enclosed sit-in hull design naturally requires more material and will therefore be heavier, though some of that weight has been offset by the use of the thinner drop-stitch.
The bag is a comfortable backpack-style design that also includes wheels, giving you the option to roll the kayak along the ground. The packed size was very manageable throughout our testing.
On balance, we feel the benefits of the kayak on the water outweigh it being slightly on the heavier side, though we felt it only right to reflect that in our rating of 7 here.
Comfort (seat support, legroom, fatigue over distance): 10/10
Razor Kayaks has updated its seat across its latest models with a thicker foam base, which provided a good degree of comfort on longer paddles. The footrest was also well positioned for paddling ergonomics, and there is a generous amount of legroom throughout.
Importantly, the easy adjustability of the seats and the absence of any internal barrier inside the cockpit gives two paddlers plenty of flexibility to arrange the space to suit them. Our two tallest testers were able to paddle this kayak without coming into contact with one another, which is no mean feat.
The optional spray skirt also allows the kayak to be used comfortably in all conditions. We found it effective at keeping us dry when testing it in choppy coastal conditions, and it would certainly extend the paddling season well into the colder months.
Value for money:
Priced at £1,145, this kayak sits firmly in the premium category. It is an extremely well-performing kayak with excellent build quality and thoughtful design throughout, and as the best 2-person kayak we have tested, we rated its value for money as good.
Best for:
Taller paddlers or those looking for comfort and a spacious cockpit
Paddlers seeking a high-performing kayak
A wide range of water and weather conditions (rivers, lakes, coastal)
Long day trips or multi-day expeditions
All body types including larger and heavier paddlers
Committed paddlers looking to invest in the very best option
Overall:
The Edge Pro 2 is an extremely comfortable, durable and high-performing kayak. It was a genuine pleasure to spend hours in, and rated highly across all of our categories.
